Brain injury is an injury to the brain that occurs
after birth and which is not hereditary, congenital
or degenerative. Traumatic brain injury
(TBI) can disrupt the normal functioning of the brain
and is usually caused by a blow or jolt to the head.
Brain injuries may result in:
- Paralysis
- Loss of voluntary or involuntary motor functions
- Loss of reasoning and thinking abilities
- Memory loss
- Sensory loss such as sight, speech or hearing
- Emotional disabilities including depression, anxiety,
post traumatic stress disorder, etc.
The most common types of head injuries are:
Concussion: The common result of a
blow to the head or sudden deceleration usually causing
an altered mental state, either temporary or prolonged.
Physiologic and/or anatomic disruption of connections
between some nerve cells in the brain may occur. Often
used by the public to refer to a brief loss of consciousness.
Anoxic Brain Injury: An injury that
results from a lack of oxygen to the brain. This is
most often from a lack of blood flow due to injury or
bleeding.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): An acquired
injury to the brain caused by an external physical force,
resulting in total or partial functional disability
or psychosocial impairment, or both, that adversely
affects a child's educational performance. The term
applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in
impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition;
language; memory; attention; reasoning; abstract thinking;
judgment; problem-solving; sensory, perceptual and motor
abilities; psychosocial behavior; physical functions;
information processing; and speech. The term does not
apply to brain injuries that are congenital or degenerative,
or brain injuries induced by birth trauma
